I scream, you scream, we all scream sunscreen!

6 Mar

So you know I wax lyrical about the importance of sunscreen (well I hope I do) and how you MUST wear it everyday, well I guess a lot of you are thinking “very well old chap, but which ONE?”. There are a lot out there, and I am verrrrrry picky when it comes to my facial sunscreens (not too oily, no white cast, blends in, doesn’t block pores)… so I thought I would share with you my tried and tested and much loved sunscreens to wear on an every day occasion (note that when I go out in the sun for a whole day I wear the big kahuna – the Invisible Zinc).

When choosing a sun block make sure it is just that a block and not a sunscreen (I know I know I just called them sunscreens). A sunscreen absorbs rather than reflects harmful rays. Sun blocks must have a high zinc and or titanium base to be effective and must be an SPF 30+ or above.

Do you want your collagen to breakdown, lose elasticity of your skin, get uneven skin tone and lines and wrinkles? No? Didn’t think so… So read on and get shopping!

1. O Cosmedics Mineral Pro SPF 30+ Triple Defence Protection (AU$45, 75g)

Mineral Pro SPF 30+ is a sheer lightweight formula which delivers triple defense protection. 20% natural zinc oxides provides true broad-spectrum protection, preventing skin damage as well as assisting skin healing and reducing inflammation. Resveratrol and Palmitoyl Loligo peptides rejuvenate, hydrate and further protect the skin. The perfect calming skin treatment and the ultimate skin primer before make up. Perfect for everyday use!

Key Ingredients:
ZINC OXIDE 20% w/w
Preservatives:
Phenoxyethanol, Diazolidinylurea.
Complies with AS/NZS 2604:1998

2. Ultra UV Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF 30+ Hydrating (AU$65, 100ml)

Packed with antioxidants and featuring super effective broad-spectrum sun protection, Ultra UV Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF 30+ is an enduring best-seller. The creamy, nourishing formula glides on without any of the usual white tint and offers great protection against UVA rays (the ones responsible for photo-ageing), so no age-defying battle is complete without it. This broad spectrum SPF 30+ daily moisturiser (free of nano particles) offers triple skin protection with a boost of hydration. It delivers a vital blend of moisturising ingredients: shea butter, panthenol and nicotinamide to support the skin’s lipid barrier function. The hydrating properties make it a great base under makeup too.

Ultraceuticals Ultra Protective SPF30 Sunscreen

Active Ingredients: Octyl methoxycinnamate 2.0% w/w, Butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane 5.0% w/w, Octocrylene 3.0% w/w, Bemotrizinol 2.0% w/w, Phenylbenzimidazole Sulfonic Acid 4.0% w/w. Also Contains: Benzyl alcohol and Sorbic acid.

3. La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL SPF 50+ Extreme Fluid (AU $25.95, 50ml) – Available from Priceline

This one is a recent purchase for me, and already has made this prestigious list! I was quite excited to see this range on sale at Priceline a few weeks ago, and even more excited when I saw that they had a 50+ fluid sunblock range. The Anthelios XL Fluid Extreme 50+ has been certified as SPF50+ Very high UVA/UVB protection – which is music to my ears!  The skin is protected from sunburn, skin reactions and cell damage from UV rays. This is a fluid (so think more watery than your usual sunscreens), but is actually perfect for putting on in the morning before makeup, because this consistency melts into the skin almost instantly and doesn’t leave you feeling like you just caked something greasy onto your skin. It doesn’t leave you with a white tint, and I haven’t had any congestion from this one either. If you haven’t jumped onto the 50+ bandwagon yet, I strongly advise you do! It’s amazing!

La-Roche-Posay-50+

Key Ingredients: Aqua/Water, Isododecane, Isononyl Isononanoate, Alcohol Denat, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Cyclohexasiloxane, Octocrylene, Titanium Dioxide, Isocetyl Stearate, Silica.
*This product is compliant with the new Australian Standard for UVB and UVA efficacy criteria set by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) on 10th November 2012.

I must add that all the products listed in this post, are listed mainly due to the fact that they work well under makeup and do not leave me with congested skin and breakouts. Like always though, what may be good for the goose (me!) may not be good for the gander (you girls! or boys!) and I can’t guarantee that these will all work for you and your skin type.

O Cosmedics sun block was gifted to me. As per my disclosure statement, this does not effect my opinion. I have purchased the others with my own hard earned moolah.

Review: Aveeno Positively Radiant Tinted Moisturiser

6 Nov

Recently I was given the chance to review the Aveeno Positively Radiant Tinted Moisturiser for BellaSugar’s Sugar Spotlight. Personally I am not a huge fan of tinted moisturisers, BUT I am a fan of the new Positively Radiant range from Aveeno after using their cleanser for the past couple of months, which was much needed to bring my skin back from the flaky and desolate state it was in. So I was quite intrigued with the chance to try the Aveeno Positively Radiant Tinted Moisturiser.

First thing that brought a smile to my dial was the fact that this tinted moisturiser was broad spectrum, protecting the face from harmful UVB and UVA rays. I am astounded by how many products don’t offer broad spectrum protection, which is so important. So BRAVO Aveeno! I love that it’s SPF 15, but I saw that in the USA the Aveeno Positively Radiant Tinted Moisturiser comes in an SPF 30? This would be more ideal for Australian conditions. I love that it’s also oil free, hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic, so it’s great for all skin types.

I can’t really comment on the effectiveness of the Active Naturals Total Soy Complex to even skin tone and texture, I believe this would be more evident after an extended period of use. However the natural light-reflecting minerals it contains were great at giving a radiant glow to the face. So I guess you can fake it till you make it.

The texture was great, not too thick or runny, except I was very disappointed to find that it didn’t blend on my skin that well and seemed to “ball up”; when trying to apply with a brush, it seemed to cling to the brush and not transfer onto my skin.

My other dislike was the sheerness of the tint. Now I know it specifies sheer tint (I used the fair to light colour), however by the time I vigorously blended this into my skin (to try stop the product from balling up and sitting on top of my skin), it seemed to be all rubbed off and I was left with hardly any coverage. I had to set it with a translucent powder to give it a more matte finish and to also to soften the look of my pores. Because it doesn’t provide coverage, I had to use concealer as well. I guess this would be a great product for younger, more “perfect” skin. Great for teens to wear to school to protect the skin from sun damage (wish I had thought about this earlier, doh).

Overall, I loved the new packaging. The twist lock pump-top is great for girls who need to throw this in their overnight or gym bag and makes it that much more user-friendly. I think the only change I would make to improve this product would be to improve the formula so that it blends and melds with the skin, and maybe that would increase the chance of more coverage. I like that it is light, it just needs to take that step up from leaving my face looking naked (because really, I need a lot more to fake the ‘barely there’ look). Thanks Aveeno and BellaSugar for giving me the chance to trial this tinted moisturiser. I’m a huge fan of the positively radiant cleanser and continue to use it daily after months of use (which says a lot for a beauty blogger with products coming out her wazoo).

Invisible from the sun

1 Nov

Summer is right around the corner, and we need to start getting prepared. Yes I know you are all worried about getting your figure ready for summer, but you know what’s more important than that? Protecting your skin from the harmful sun. All the hard work and expensive products you’ve put into/onto your face over the cooler months to get your pigmentation under control is all going to be a big fat waste of time if you don’t put into place protective measures over Spring/Summer. And we all know what this means… yep, slip, slop, slap.

Now I hear you all groaning from here. “Blerghhh sunscreen is so sticky and smelly”, “Erghh how am I supposed to look stylish whilst trying to be sun safe”, “How am I supposed to wear sunscreen EVERYYYY day???”. Well I have some style tips and products that will set you up for summer and have you looking your stylish sun-safe best in time for those hot weekends ahead!

Going to the beach doesn’t have to be all garish rash shirts and fluro zinc… grap yourself a floppy wide-brimmed hat (from the Surf shops or somewhere like Sunburn) and a pair of stylish oversized sunnies, like the gorgeous House of Harlow Chelsea sunglasses (pictured below) to protect yourself from the sun. Also remember to take a clip/barrette like the Mimco one pictured below to whip your hair up into a stylish low bun so that you aren’t caught out with scraggly surf hair after your swim.

My pick for the best protective skin care in Summer (or anytime) would be the great products from Invisible Zinc. Doubling as a high performance sunscreen and moisturiser, Invisible Zinc offers a diverse range of products to help relieve your skin from daily obstacles such as dry flaky skin, dark spots and sun damage. The secret is Invisible Zinc’s chemical free formula, designed to protect you against harmful UVA and UVB rays whilst providing powerful antioxidants to make your skin look radiant and flawless.

The stand out product for me is the INVISIBLE ZINC UV Silk Shield Foundation (15g RRP AU$42) which is a hybrid of a SPF 30+ chemical free sunscreen and stick foundation. In fact, if you were none the wiser, you could be tricked into thinking this is just a stick foundation! No stickiness, no obvious sunscreen smell, no shine, and best of all… HEAPS of coverage. Like I said, this performs exactly like a full coverage cream to powder foundation stick. I love that this is a skin care, sun protection and makeup product all-in-one! It sure does come in handy when you have minimal time to get ready in the morning, as it cuts out so many extra steps. So how does it wear you ask? GREAT! This lasts all day on me (8hrs) and I have oily skin. It covers pigmentation and imperfections and I find it hardly needs a powder. Just swipe and rub in with you fingers. It glides smoothly onto the skin (like SILK!) and provides a luminous, fresh skin finish. The shade I have (medium) is a great match too. The shade variety is very limited though, so that might be a problem for some. I advise you test swatch them first, Myer and David Jones usually have testers out for this.

The other product I have been trialling is the INVISIBLE ZINC Staying Powder (12g RRP AU$38.00) which is a no-colour, setting powder  specially designed  to set and fix the IZ Tinted Daywear Anti-Ageing Moisturising Sunscreen (which needs a setting powder) and give a perfect natural finish. The product says it should melt into the skin and be invisible, sadly, for me this product kind of sits in my pores and is quite visible. It could just happen over the top of the UV Silk Shield Foundation, as it was designed to set the Tinted Daywear sunscreen, so I’m only using it when I’m wearing the tinted sunscreen (which it behaves much better with) for trips to the beach, gardening etc. The tinted daywear is much more like a sunscreen, and is a bit oilier than the Silk Shield Foundation and has less coverage.

Dab on some INVISIBLE ZINC Tinted Lip + Cheek Balm (12g RRP AU$18.00) and waterproof mascara, and you are ready to go.

Stockists include Myer, David Jones, Adore Beauty, Priceline and selected premium pharmacies.  For stockist details please call 1300 738 850 or visit www.invisiblezinc.com

Weapon of choice

28 Nov

I’m on my way over to Moreton Island as we speak/type (thank you iPhone for keeping me occupied on the journey over) and I thought I would share with you all, my weapon of choice for sun protection over the next few days. This weapon packs a punch, with its squirt nozzle and added benefits (talking about added Vitamin E and Aloe Vera for moisture) and it’s oh so easy to use. I’m talking about the new Le Tan SPF 30+ coconut mist spray.

UPDATE!

I am very pleased (and proud) to report that I DID NOT get burnt at all on my 2 days over at Moreton Island. What a good little girl I am!! But all thanks don’t go to just me (although I was the weirdo with a huge sun hat, t-shirt and sunnies permanently stuck to my face the entire time). I have to thank my wonderful weapons against UV – Le Tan SPF 30+ coconut mist spray and Shiseido SPF 36+ Sun Protection Stick Foundation. The spray nozzle on the Le Tan sunscreen was very helpful for my covert “cover peeps in sunscreen” mission over there. I easily snuck up on the bf and sprayed him down for good measure. Mwahahahaha.

The bf was kind enough to 4WD me over to Tangalooma from the campsite and sit and wait with me for a few hours (just so I could get a seat before the entire guest list of the resort came down), so I could see the dolphins come in for the nightly feed at the jetty. It was AH-MAZING. I wanted to swim with them. I actually did try one day when I saw one swimming not far out from the water’s edge, but alas all the whistling/water slapping/bait fish throwing I did, the dolphin thought, ‘what a fool’ and continued to ignore me.

Here is said ‘fool’ posing like a fool with a dolphin statue at Tangalooma (I was bored ok)

And the beautiful Moreton Island herself

Latest haul

16 Nov

So I just thought I’d share my latest haul with you guys from the last week or so. Gotta a few different goodies and I will do a few reviews on some of the products at a later date.

I needed a new cleanser so I thought I would try the L’Occitane Foaming Rice Cleanser. What drew me to this product was the fact that it’s a rich foaming cleanser (and soap-free) which removes make-up, impurities & excess sebum. The red rice powder helps absorbs surface oil & mattes out shine, whilst the zinc helps to rebalance & control oil production. Just what my oily/combo skin needs (and the fact that it’s a pump pack and you only need a small amount was just the icing on the cake really).

The Shiseido Sun Protection Stick Foundation SPF36+ in Ochre which I have previously raved about in my post ‘Beach Bag Beauty’. This product is such a winner, so much so that I have started to wear it everyday! It lasts all day, provides broad UV sun protection and leaves me with a healthy “glowing” tan complexion.

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Melonade 180 – this lipstick provides intense colour and moisture. And is so on trend for summer. Will post on this soon!

Lush Cosmetics Gingerbread House Bubble Bar – when I went to Pacific Fair on the weekend, I dragged the whole of my family (some willing, some not) into this store and put my nose to work. My pick was this bubble bar because it just smells SO.DARN.GOOD! Seriously I just want to crush it up and stick it in my nostrils. And how cute is it!? I spent the whole next day smelling it repeatedly. There needs to be a candle/melt made of this scent because it’s to die for. I think it was only $6.50 or $8.50? Can’t remember. But you only have to use a 1/3 for each bath. Review to come!

Australis ‘Paint The Town’ Nail polish exclusively for Target – I got the light blue colour as that was the only one left at Target when I went. But I am hoping to go and pick up some more of the colours in the range. I’ll keep you posted.

And lastly, Benefit Hoola Bronzer because I am starting to see the bottom of my first one 😦 and this is the BEST bronzer I have ever come across. Well for me anyway. It’s perfect for conturing and it’s not a oompa loompa colour, it looks natural.

beach bag beauty

15 Nov

This weekend the weather was perfect, my family were staying at Surfer’s Paradise and I had some new bikinis to break in… so what was a girl to do? BEACH TRIP!! So what did I pack in my beach bag? Let’s take a looksie shall we?

• Evodia Australia Tropical Passion Body Fragrance ($23.95) – I just spray a light mist of this over my hair and body. The fragrance reminds me of the beach with it’s exotic ‘tropical’ scent which is quite fitting really. I use this instead of perfume because I’ve always believed that you shouldn’t wear perfume to the beach. Not that I don’t think you shouldn’t smell lovely, but because I think the alcohol in perfume assists the burning of your skin. Now this is just my crazy belief and I don’t know if it has been scientifically proven but a lot of older ladies have always said that they think the freckles all over their neck are caused by wearing a perume in the sun. Has anyone else heard of this? Or is it just me being a bit crazy?

• Shiseido SPF 36+ Sun Protection Stick Foundation in Ochre ($45.00) – a treatment-enriched stick foundation that defends against powerful UVA/UVB rays as it provides a sheer natural finish for a smooth radiant look. I LURVEEEE this stick foundation. I love the fact that this is a SPF 36+ sun protectant and foundation in one and I don’t have to rock up to the beach looking like casper the friendly ghost from using a cheap ghostly white oily sunscreen lotion on my face. This stick foundation isn’t oily (I have oily/combo skin) and the actual coverage of the foundation is really good. Added bonus – it’s water-resistant too! You can’t go wrong, seriously – you need to get this in your life NOW.

• A comb and hair band (not pictured) – well this is simple really, who wants the frizzy rats nest of a hair do you get from being dumped in the surf? Not me. I comb my hair and flip it up into a top knot while the hair is still wet. Easy peasey beach hair do!

• Moroccanoil Oil Treatment for all hair types ($49.50) – this one doesn’t necessarily make it to the beach but it is a MUST for your hair before you head off for the day. This oil absorbs instantly into your hair to provide shine, conditioning and restores elasticity all while protecting your hair from environmental factors i.e. the big bad sun. Great to apply to hair while it’s wet before putting your hair up in a top knot.

• Le Tan SPF 30+ Coconut Mist Spray ($16.95) – this spray sunscreen is new to the Le Tan range this year and I think it’s a winner of a product. Not only is it so convenient to use because of it’s spray nozzle, but the formula is broad spectrum, non-ghosting, 2 hours water resistant and best part – it smells like coconut and contains Aloe Vera and Vitamin E for moisturising. WHAT.A.WINNER! Seriously, I challenge you to find a more convenient, bang-for-your-buck sunscreen. Oh did I mention it’s recommended by Surf Life Saving Australia?!

• Bloom Cosmetics Sheer Colour Cream in Coy ($24.00) – this is a pinky/peach cheek and lip cream that I use for a blush over the top of the Shiseido stick foundation. This gives a pop of colour on my cheeks (as I don’t weat any other makeup on my face apart from the stick foundation) and stays throughout the day. The best thing about a cream blush is that you can just chuck the product in your bag when you head off and you don’t have to worry about brushes – the tools are already with you – your fingers!!

• Hissyfit Lip Service lip balm with SPF 30+ ($18.95) – this wonder prod provides broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection from the sun whilst being ultra hydrating with shea butter, jojoba oil and vitamin E. It’s a super smart product to take with you to the beach because whilst we all tend to slap the sunscreen on the face, how many of you apply sun protection to your lips huh? Yes, that’s what I thought, not many. Oh and this lip balm smells saaweeeet!! Make sure you get this for summer to keep those luscious lips of yours damage free. Trust me, you’ll thank me later (like laterrrrr later, in your 60s/70s).

So tell me, what are your summer beauty staples?

I’d love to know what everyone else takes to the beach.
