Mario Badescu Haul

30 Jan

I saw on Facebook that my friend Yolanda (from Shopping Intervention) had been to Kit Cosmetics and picked up a Mario Badescu product, and she also told me that our other friend Dana (from Blushfully) was a huge fan of the stuff. I had been wanting to try this line of skincare for ages, and when the girls said that the prices had recently been reduced thanks to the strong Aussie dollar, I was hell bent on getting my hands on some MB. So off I headed on Saturday to Kit Cosmetics to get me some goodies!! So here is what I got… 3 products and a small surprise gift with purchase which were cute sample size products.

I had asked Yolanda and Dana what they recommended and they both agreed that the Drying Lotion was a must and Dana loved the Enzyme Cleansing Gel, so I got both these and the Buffering Lotion which the sales assistant said is really good at getting rid of those pesky little ‘under-the-skin-bumps’ that aren’t quite at the surface, which immediately grabbed my attention. She also said it would help get rid of those blind hormonal pimples under the surface… I hate those! So far, I have used the cleansing gel and the buffering lotion and absolutely LOVE them. The cleanser is low foaming and it makes your skin feel clean without the tight feeling. I used the buffering lotion on some small bumps on my cheek area (most likely caused by rubbing sunglasses) and it almost cleared them up overnight, the area was smoother and the bumps reduced. Amazing.

The samples I got were a Super+ Eye Cream sample, a Kit Cosmetics Bronzing Lotion, a sample size of the Mario Badescu cleanser I bought, and an Origins anti-ageing moisturiser.

I’m so glad that I bought these Mario Badescu goodies, I have a feeling I should stock up… as some of these may become permanent fixtures in my skincare routine. The prices for Mario Badescu at Kit Cosmetics are so reasonable now too, the Enzyme Cleansing gel cost me $18.95 and the Buffering Lotion and Drying Lotion are both $26.95.

I popped into Colette Accessories as well and ended up finding this cute neon pink necklace for a bargain price of $7.95! I just had to grab it… and I thought it would look cool underneath the collar of a black sheer top I own. I thought right…

M.A.C Semi Precious items and lipstick from M.A.C counter at Myer.
Illamasqua foundation from www.illamasqua.com (they ship to Australia).
Lancome mascara from David Jones (and picked up the Gift With Purchase).
Babyliss Pro Conical Wand from Price Attack.
I love that you get so many free samples with Sephora online (I had to split the products up into 3 x $50 gift card purchases so I got 3 x the free stuff)
If you can, Sephora hauls are the best – they have so many good brands and the US retail prices are like half what we pay here in Australia.

Brisbane Bloggers Bring Out Their Alter Ego!

6 Jun

I heart Illamasqua, it’s one of those brands that push the envelope, force you to think outside the box and have fun expressing yourself with makeup. On Friday evening, June 3rd, Illamaqua held a Beauty Blogger Event for a privileged number of Brisbane beauty bloggers, and I must say, it made me fall even more in love with Illamasqua (as if I didn’t already love them enough), and here’s why:

  • The Illamasqua brand pushes the envelope, it’s bright, quirky, fun and most importantly, of VERY HIGH quality (it has been created to be used as theatre makeup so you know you’re going to get highly pigmented, long lasting products – and who doesn’t love that?!).
  • Everyone behind this brand is SO passionate, SO friendly, SO creatively minded, SO talented, SO inspiring. They just love what they do, they love to pass on their knowledge and most of all, love to transform people and bring out their alter ego.
  • They are the fastest growing makeup brand ever, and rightly so!
  • They are also a brand with a conscience, and are proud of the fact that none of their products, from blushers to brushes, are tested on animals.
  • As a brand that promotes the right to experiment and self-express through the way you look, Julian Kynaston didn’t think it was right to create a brand that encouraged people to wear bold looks (male or female), without being commited to stamping out prejudice, hatred and intolerance everywhere…

On 11th August 2007, 20 year-old Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend Robert Maltby were kicked, stamped on and left unconscious – for nothing more than looking different. Sophie later died from her injuries. As a tribute to Sophie, Illamasqua commissioned ‘Dark Angel’ – a short film by award-winning French director, Fursy Teyssier, that’s a haunting rendition of Sophie’s story, featuring the music of iconic British band, Portishead. The aim of the film is to raise awareness of The Sophie Lancaster Foundation and generate £500,000 to help educate young people about tolerance. Since Sophie’s death, the Foundation has been working with behavioural experts Huthwaite International, to put together an interactive youth workshop that does just that.

If that wasn’t enough of an indicator of the balls behind this brand, here is a snippet of the heritage of the makeup brand and how it came about:
“Illamasqua is the product of a heady mix of influences. Its roots stem from the dark and illicit 1920s club scene, and combine a rich heritage in the manufacture of make-up for film and theatre. It also takes inspiration from members of the ‘alternative scenes’ for whom self-expression is paramount. Alternative cultures have always dared to be dramatic. They have an emotional attachment to making up. It’s an expression of their darker side, a release for their alter ego.
Illamasqua is for the bolder person hiding inside all of us. It is an act and an attitude. A symbol of tolerance. A celebration of idiosyncrasies. A confident statement of self-ownership.”
Illamasqua Australia was kind enough to take the time to host an event at the Illamasqua counter, Myer Centre to introduce the brand to all the Brisbane bloggers. The event was an opportunity for bloggers to meet Christabel Draffin from the Australian team (finally, after many a Twitter/email conversation), hear all about Illamasqua, watch MUA Tiarah demonstrate a look from the Toxic Nature collection, and for Christabel let us in on some exciting upcoming news for the brand.

Benefit Brow Bar – Putting the WOW into your BROWS!

25 Apr

Let me start by saying I’m a past victim of overplucking (sadly at my own hands), and had to endure the unsightly “grow back” stage where I had to restrain from touching my brows for nearly a whole year to let them grow out. So now that I  have my brows back to where I want them – I am very dubious to let anyone touch them.

Thursday saw the opening of the first Benefit Brow Bar in Brisbane at the Brisbane City Myer Centre. So after work, I headed into the city to check it out.

If you haven’t already, you should really check out Benefit – everything is so adorable – from their counters to their products through to their staff!

Benefit Brisbane's main counter

The new Brow Bar at Brisbane Myer Centre is actually separate from the main counter. It’s around the corner opposite the Kit Cosmetics and next to the shoe department. This counter is set up especially for the Brow Bar service.

Benefit Brow Bar

where you sit to get your brows done

I was looked after by Hannah, who happens to be the Brow & Services Trainer for Benefit Cosmetics Australia and she explained to me the Brow Bar experience and that she would be doing a wax, shape and tint for me.

I was a bit stand off-ish, but Hannah is the bombdotcom at what she does. Hannah is a qualified beauty therapist, as are all the Benefit brow bar girls and each and every one of them go through ‘Brow Bar University’ where they are all trained in the Benefit way of waxing, shaping and tinting. So you can rest easy knowing that when you go to Benefit Brow Bar – you will be in good hands.

First they get you to sign an agreement that you haven’t had any microdermabrasion, taking any medication, haven’t applied fake tan etc. before they begin. This is actually quite important – as Hannah explained to me that applying tint to the skin when fake tan has previously been applied will actually cause the hair to go green as the tint reacts with the DHA in the tan – and we don’t want Grinch eyebrows now do we girls?! So make sure you explain to the Benefit technician any beauty treatments you have done recently to your face, as it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Secondly, Hannah illustrated to me the brow shaping process and how they actually go about perfecting the perfect brow shape. I have demonstrated below the three points of the brow, the start, the arch and the end, and how they go about finding those points to shape the perfect brow.

1. The start of your brow is found by placing a line straight up from the edge of your nose in line with the inner corner of your eye.

2. The arch of your brow (highest point) is found by placing a line from the same edge of your nose and lining that up with the outer edge of your iris.

3. The end of the brow is found by placing a line from the same edge of you nose, in line with the outer corner of your eye and extended in a straight line.

Your brows should be around the thickness of a pen, and the Benefit brow technician will advise you if you are to grow out any areas of your brows.

Hannah only had to tidy up the start of my brows, take a little bit off the top to smooth out my naturally high arch points and then tidied up underneath etc. When finished she applied powder to hide redness using Hello Flawless and perfectly defined my brows using the new Brows-a-go-go set.

playing with the new kid on the block

12 Feb

Last Saturday, Annica and I decided it was about time we check out the Illamasqua counter at Myer in the Brisbane Queen Street Mall and treat ourselves to a day of makeovers and retail therapy (and some scrumptious sushi thrown in for good measure). Illamasqua is relatively new to Australian shores and the response from bloggers nationwide is a resounding YIPEEE! We booked ourselves in to see Suzanne for a tour and a bit of a play.

After ‘ooooh’ing and ‘ahhh’ing over all the amazing make up, we both decided to pick out a few eye shadows that we normally wouldn’t go for and see what look Suzanne the MUA could create for us. Naturally I gravatate towards the more natural browns/taupes (typical smokey eye colours), so I decided to go for pastel pinks and purples.

Here is what was used for the eyes:

Powder eye shadow in Toxic

Powder eye shadow in Cancan

Powder eye shadow in Synth

Used as a highlighter on my brow bone and above the crease was Halcyon, an awesome liquid Illuminator

Finished off with liquid eyeliner and mascara, taadaaaa!… the finished result on the eyes!

The face was touched up with the Rich Liquid Foundation in #200 and Powder Foundation in #210. Cheeks were contoured with Powder Foundation #325, gorgeous pale pink Powder blush in Nymph high on the cheekbones and bronzer to finish in Writhe.

Used on the lips was Lipstick in Over, a bright coral pink with a matt finish; and Intense Lipgloss in Mistress over the top. I loved Mistress (the intense lip gloss) and I bought it for myself.

Here is the overall finished result, I felt like I should have been attending a Miami beach party afterwards. The look was very bright but still suitable for the day time. Loved all the products used, and loved the finished result!

Annica and I all done up thanks to Suzanne at Illamasqua counter Brisbane.

I picked up a few products (reviews to come) and I really want to go back and get some more, especially that pale pink blush Nymph which was all sold out at the time :(

Everything is such high quality and highly pigmented. It would make a great addition to any make up lovers stash!
