Blow Dry Bar Has Blown In!

11 Dec

Good news ladies of Brisbane! Bad hair days are no more! And this news couldn’t have come at a better time…

Picture this! You’ve got a crazy day at work, and you have to make yourself presentable for the work Christmas Party that night but you don’t have time to go home. Well this is exactly the predicament I found myself in yesterday, and you could imagine my relief when the ladies at the new Blow Dry Bar at the Emporium, Fortitude Valley said that they could fit me in for an express wash and blow-dry that afternoon before the party. I would be in and out in half an hour, looking like I had just stepped off the pages of a glossy mag! And to make it even more appealing, a glass of bubbles was involved.

The Blow Dry Bar, a modern girl’s solution to bad hair days, opened it’s shiny new doors on Friday, 7th December located at the Emporium, a great location. There’s free on-site car parking too, and if you’re anything like me, that’s a huge plus!

blowdrybar_fortitudevalley

You would expect this to set you back a pretty penny right? Wrong. Fast becoming the destination for females who seek consistent service and value in their beauty regime, Blow Dry Bar salons are the first of their kind in Australia.  Their concept is simple – help women look expensive without paying the price. Blow Dry Bar can get you from work to gorgeous in just half an hour, with express blow-dries for just $40 (including the wash and massage)!

I was pampered firstly at the wash basin and had my hair washed with the Bangstyle products they stock, then with glass of bubbles in hand, I was introduced to Liz who worked her magic on my hair to give volume and curl to a somewhat flat and lifeless head of hair. Liz has been working as a hairdresser for 10 years and for the last three years she has been working on cruise ships! How cool.

So I guess you want to see the finished result? I’ll let the photo do the talking! 😉

Want to hear even better news? To celebrate their opening week, come down to Blow Dry Bar at Emporium during opening week and enjoy a $15.00 Blow Dry and glass of bubbles, applicable during opening week:  07/12/12 to 14/12/12 and subject to availability.

To make an appointment at Blow Dry Bar at the Emporium call 07 3666 0237, or for more information visit blowdrybar.com.au

I was kindly pampered at the Blow Dry Bar as their guest and as per my disclosure statement, this did not influence my opinion in any way and all reviews are of my own honest opinion.

Time Saving Hair Products for a Time Poor Girl

19 May

As my previous posts have indicated, I have recently become very time poor due to work. Lucky for a handful of genius hair products, my hair hasn’t had to suffer. Truthfully, I am very lacklustre with my hair routine anyway… so I really shouldn’t be blaming time constraints for my lack of interest in hair. Hair sadly falls down the bottom of my beauty pyramid.

So enough dribble, let me get on to the good stuff – the hair products that I use on a daily/weekly basis because they’re damn good and save me a LOT of time. I mean… what girl wouldn’t want to cut down time spent preening in front of the mirror each morning?

1. MOROCCANOIL FRIZZ CONTROL SPRAY*

Moroccanoil Frizz Control is formulated to protect against extreme weather and control frizz and static. Suitable for all hair types and styling regimens, the lightweight formula tames and relaxes hair prior to styling. Moroccanoil Frizz Control is best applied to clean, towel-dried hair and sprayed 25cm from hair and combed through, followed by heat styling i.e. blow drying.

The reason I love this spray over the Moroccanoil Treatment Oil is that:

  • it’s a spray for one, so it’s SUPER easy and quick to use, saving time on application. Just spray 1 – 3 pumps on fine hair and 2 – 5 pumps on thick hair and comb through.
  • it’s perfect pre-blow dry because it relaxes the hair and prevents frizz and flyways (reducing the need to use a straightening air and therefore reducing time spent on hair).
  • it’s a lightweight formula so your hair isn’t left feeling oily or weighed down.
  • regular use helps protect hair from humidity, excessive brushing/combing, chemical processing and excessive heat–styling.

Moroccanoil Frizz Control, 100ml, RRP AU $49.95 available from salons nationwide.

2. CEDEL DRY SHAMPOO FOR DARK HAIR

Cedel Dry Shampoo is a waterless shampoo spray that instantly refreshes dull, greasy and lifeless hair between washes. The special formulation for dark hair removes dirt and excess oil leaving your hair looking, feeling and smelling fresh. Cedel Dry Shampoo banishes oily roots and adds volume and texture.

Perfect for use on the go,  second/third/fourth day hair, after a day in the office to spruce up your blow dry, travelling, or after the gym. It sprays like a hair spray and is tinted a dark colour for all the dark haired lasses.

The reason I love Dry Shampoo is that:

  • it is tinted for darker hair to avoid the white powdery residue the normal formulas leave.
  • it soaks up oil AND adds volume! Awesome for fine haired people like myself.
  • you can add texture to hair for up dos, and the dry shampoo extends hair styles by days.

Shake the can, spray evenly in the roots from about 20cms away, focusing on the roots. Leave it to soak up oiliness for a minute or two and then brush your hair.

The only thing I don’t like about dry shampoos (of any brand) is that it leaves a powdery substance in your brush from brushing it out.

Cedel Dry Shampoo for Darker Hair, 70g/110ml, RRP AU $7.99 available from Supermarkets, Priceline, Big W, Kmart, Target and selected pharmacies.

3. NEW CEDEL DRY CONDITIONER*

A NEW revolution in hair care, Cedel Dry Conditioner is a waterless leave-in no-rinse conditioning foam that instantly revitalises and hydrates hair without the use of water – saving precious time! With the addition of Vitamin E to nourish hair, this moisturising foam reduces dryness, controls frizz, and helps to protect hair from the effects of the sun.

Suitable for all hair types, Cedel Dry Conditioner is perfect for use on the go, after a day in the office, travelling, after the gym, or if you are not able to shower. Ideal for use with Cedel Dry Shampoo.

I like the dry conditioner because:

  • it’s the perfect companion to the dry shampoo, replacing moisture to the middle and ends of your hair.
  • it gives your hair a refresh
  • it smells good
  • it’s a non-greasy conditioning foam
  • it controls frizz and protects hair from the drying effects of the sun
  • I use it on frizzled ends (after being twisted up in a top knot) to reset the hair, give it a boost of moisture and add some shine!
It is a mousse formula, so make sure to shake can well and only use a small amount of foam, working your way from the ends up to the mid-lengths. I don’t use this on my roots.

Cedel Dry Conditioner,  70g/110ml, RRP AU $9.99 available from Priceline and selected pharmacies from May 2012.

4. LARGE HAIR DONUT

The hair donut is a genius tool to create a full, quick up style in no time. This is my go-to for when I have dirty hair and have no time to wash my hair before going out. It creates a flawless ballerina bun or a perfectly-messy “fairy floss” bun. See the two styles as done on my own hair…

ballerina bun using hair donut

messy “fairy floss” bun with hair donut and lots of teasing

The hair donut helps gives the illusion of fullness, which I need with my fine and short hair. It’s so easy to use, I don’t know how I lived without it. Both styles above took me 5 mins max to create. I used dry shampoo, hair spray, a teasing comb (for the fairy floss/ricki lee style bun), hair tie and a few bobby pins.

I bought mine from Pricecutters salon for about $11. But I know you can get them at Price Attack, Hairhouse Warehouse and other selected retailers.

So tell me hautees, do you have any brilliant time-saving tips in the hair department?

Who else skimps on time and tender loving care when it comes to their hair? Please tell me it’s not just me!

Products marked with a * were kindly sent these products for consideration, as per my disclosure statement, this did not influence my opinion in any way and all reviews are of my own honest opinion.

My first ILoveThisBox (November 2011)

18 Dec

I was nicely offered to trial the first ever ILoveThisBox beauty sample box. I was a bit sceptical about the beauty sample boxes, but I’m glad to say that I was nicely surprised by this one. 🙂

ILoveThisBox brings a fabulous monthly selection of up to 5 luxurious cosmetic samples straight to your door. By working with the best brands and focusing on the latest trends they ensure each month’s box is a real treat.

Delivery is included in your monthly or annual membership fee and you can cancel a monthly membership at any time (which I know is one of the first questions asked by most). The monthly subscription fee is AUD 14.95.

My first impression was, WOW… there are a LOT of full size products included, and some of them are new and or not seen before – which is exactly what you want to get from these sample box services.

The package arrived in good condition and the box/packaging was very cute… and it came with product detail card to tell you exactly what you got.

Want to see what I got in the November box?…

November’s box included:

– NEW Keratinology by Sunsilk Salon Perfection Shampoo and Conditioner full size products – a premium collection formulated with Keratin Micro Technology

– Certified Organic by NATURE, NVEY ECO’s Taupe [#172] Eyeshadow full size product – a lovely taupe eyeshadow colour that is talc free

– POD Liquid Tan Gradual Tanning Face Serum full size product – a light weight serum using a eco-cert vegetable tanning active

– Caudalie Paris skin care samples: Premières vendanges moisturizing cream, Anti-wrinkle serum,  Anti-wrinkle ultra-nourishing cream.

– Essie mini nail polish in French Affair from the Spring 2011 Collection

When I first opened the box, there was this AMAZING smell – turned out to be the New Sunsilk Keratinology hair products. These are great and have been my favourite products from the box so far. The nail polish is a gorgeous colour and I’m keen to try out the facial tanning serum.

There was also a discount offer for Magnolia Silver Jewellery included.

All in all, I was very pleased with the first box from ILoveThisBox, and I think that the brands they have partnered up with are quite good and something that I would love to receive. And the goodies were ginormous!
These boxes could also be a great gift for somebody, I mean who doesn’t love getting presents in the mail?

You can check out more about ILoveThisBox over at their website. They also have a blog! Make sure you sign up if you are interested… I think that the cut off date for the December box has passed, but you should be able to get in for the January one!

ABBW Prep: The Hair Makeover with Oscar Oscar Salon

21 Sep

So like every other blogger attending The Australian Beauty Bloggers Weekend (ABBW), I have been making a list of primping and preening to-do’s for the big event this weekend. On the list? New hurrrrrrrrr (or hair, whatevs). My hair was a bit ratty, split-ends like nobody’s business and my balayage tips were well and truly on the way out. I craved change. I contemplated getting the balayage re-done. But that’s like so 2010. It was time to do what all the cool kids were doing. That’s right… I went in for the CHOP!! Dum dum darrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!! (shocking revelation music)

So who was I to intrust with this hair makeover right before ABBW? Well only the snazzy muffins at Oscar Oscar Salon of course!! They have a reputation for delivering above and beyond, as family members of mine have been to them before (and if the allure of the fancy salon interior, smiling staff, Aveda products and Aveda tea doesn’t do it for ya, what will?). I booked in with the crew at Oscar Oscar Chermside (located at Westfield Chermside, opposite the Apple store).

Oscar Oscar Salon Chermside

So after only one day of deliberation on what style I wanted my hair, I finally came to the conclusion that I wanted the Lob, the look that Olivia Palermo and Lara Bingle are sporting lately. Last Tuesday, I shimmied in (ok no I didn’t) to the salon, ready to be transformed! I was booked in with Michael who would do my cut, and Olivia who would be my colourist (hah! An Olivia to do an Olivia Palermo makeover on my hair – sure sign right?)

After a cup of Aveda Tea – a calming, flavourful tea that promotes a sense of well-being includes peppermint leaf, licorice root and other pure flower essences, Michael got to work on my hair. I explained what I wanted, in the most complicated way possible of course, and Michael got it straight away. I was immediately put at ease and I knew that my hair was in safe and professional hands – literally!

Michael cutting off my hair!!

As soon as Michael was finished cutting my hair, I already loved it!! And I loved how he explained the reason why he did everything the way he did – from how he cut the under layers slightly shorter so the outer layers would fall and curve neatly under so to avoid the dreaded “flick outs” you get when short hair sits on shoulders, down to the cutting style and not adding layers to the front. Everything was perfect, and I hadn’t even had the colour done yet.

Next, Olivia and I discussed hair colour. We used the image below of Olivia Palermo as the inspiration. She agreed with me about balayage being so 2010, and said that the current trend is natural, rich, dessert-like browns and caramels and just enhancing the colour you’ve got. Instead of the obvious balayage look, Olivia advised me that she would be doing a “melting colour” look in which she would lighten the ends of my hair only a few shades lighter than my natural hair color, i.e. the look Liv P has going on.

Olivia asked me lots of questions, such as how many times a week I exercise and wash my hair etc., to determine what formula she was going to use. The roots of my hair were darkened to a dark chocolate brown to add gloss and contrast with the lighter ends using the Aveda Permanent colour range (up to 99% naturally-derived formula). The lighter ends were achieved by literally just painting the ends and then using a comb to brush the colour up into hair to achieve that subtle graduation.

Wanna see the final transformation?? Of course you do… Continue reading

Rahua / Revolutionary Rainforest Hair Care

10 Aug

Bathing Beauty Organic Apothecary have launched yet another amazing exclusive organic brand – RAHUA. Born in the Amazon and perfected in NYC by Fabian Lliguin, this range is another level of hair care. The Rahua Amazon Beauty hair care range utilises the super fine oil of the Rahua nut, found only in the depths of the Amazon, to rejuvenate lifeless, dull and damaged hair. It’s unique molecular structure penetrates the hair shaft repairing the hair from the inside out, leaving your hair healthier and smoother than ever.

What’s great about this hair care brand is that even today, Amazon Beauty work in close partnership with the Quechua-Shuar tribeswomen. The Rahua oil is sourced and processed by these women in accordance with the traditional methods that have been passed down for generations. Rahua are advocate for fair trade and ethical sourcing of ingredients and gives back a percentage of sales to their sister organization Ecoagents.

I was lucky enough to be given the Rahua Finishing Treatment (AU$65.00 for 2oz) to trial. This finishing treatment prevents hair from splitting during styling, blow-drying, hot ironing and combing. Super-fine Rahua oil molecules deeply penetrate the hair’s cortex to rebuild even the most damaged tresses – strengthens strands and leaving hair smooth, shiny and frizz-free. Silicone-free, it strengthens and allows hair to grow longer while providing a glossy, weightless finish.

Everything about this product, from the treatment down to the packaging screams luxury – even the thought of using the oil of the Rahua Nut makes me feel like I am coating my hair in love… luxurious love, the kind that is often reseved for special occasions. Well, it doesn’t have to be so. You only need use the smallest amount of the cream to coat the ends of your hair (too much product and you run the risk of having any oily mess), so you can afford to use this just as much as you would any other finishing treatment. This jar will seriously last a looonnggggg time!

June Favourites 2011

27 Jul

It doesn’t look like I will get around to doing a June Favourites video, just like it doesn’t look like I’ll be 5kg lighter this summer. Oh well. You win some you lose some. Some major tooth pain from a root canal procedure, coupled with a sense of blah has really put my mojo off this month. Being in a drugged up stupor wasn’t very conducive to blog writing/youtube videos either (that may work for some people, but not me). Hopefully the worst of it is behind me now, I don’t want to be mojo-less for much longer.

So I know it’s almost to the end of July, but better late than never right??! Here is the rundown of my favourite products from the month of June:

White D-Tox [Bright Cell] Cleanser – $49.00 (AUD) for 125ml

This instant brightening micro-scrub cleanser is formulated with Biotherm’s ‘Bright Cell’ complex and Pure Extract of Thermal Plankton to help minimise the appearance of pigmentation and dark spots on the skin’s surface. And it does just that! Don’t you love products that do what they actually say they should. Let me answer that for you, YES! Hence why it is one of my favourites for the month (and every month mind you).

Napoleon Perdis Blush Patrol – $60.00 (AUD)

The swirl of rich pigments in this baked blush creates a natural flush that lasts all day. The shimmering shades imbue skin with a ravishing pop of color – who doesn’t want that? Blush Patrol is enriched with Vitamins A and C. I love the fine gold flecks in this blush, that would suit any skin tone. The colour pay off is incredible, and gives your face that glowy gleam that we crave so much in Winter. I have been reaching for this blush a lot the past month to instil some colour and glow to my dull complexion.

NARS Orgasm Illuminator – $58.00 (AUD) for 30ml

Another shimmer inducer! This luminous cream magically transforms lackluster skin into a flawless, glowing complexion. I love the faint gold fleck combined with the peachiness of this, as I always like to wear coral blushes. The Orgasm Illuminator gives me glowing cheeks and a lit-from-within look that perks up my lack-lustre complexion.

Biotherm Skin.Ergetic Night Cream – $65.00 (AUD) for 50ml

Biotherm creates SKIN.ERGETIC NIGHT, its first overnight visible high-recovery moisturiser with five tea & seed fractions. A formula with a purifying complex that promotes the elimination of impurities generated by free radicals on the skin’s surface and diminishes visible signs of fatigue. As a non-user of night creams, this one was PERFECT for me. I was always scared that a night cream was going to be too oily and heavy for my skin, but this night cream from Biotherm is such a winner for younger skin. It hasn’t broken me out and I don’t wake up with a oil slick. Phew!

OPI Pirates of the Caribbean Minis Collection – $24.95 (AUD) for 4 x 3.75ml

A limited edition collection of four mini swashbuckling shades from the Pirates of the Caribbean Collection. The OPI Pirates of the Caribbean Minis Collection contains: Skull + Glossbones: a khaki gray shade; Planks A Lot: a lavender shade; Sparrow Me The Drama: a strawberry pink shade; Stranger Tides: a sage green shade. I love all the colours and they all apply like a dream!

Rahua Finishing Treatment – $65.00 (AUD) for 2oz

A finishing treatment that rivals the famed Morrocanoil (in my opinion). Rich with organic and 100% natural ingredients… oh and it smells nommy!

Have you tried any of these?

Tell me, do you have any favourites that I MUST try?

a hairy situation

23 May

HA! That title doesn’t conjure up polite imagery does it?

Here’s the sitch hautees, I need YOUR help. I’ve been thinking lately of changing up my hair colour… and like any girl, when it comes to a big decision like that, we don’t just take the plunge willy nilly. So what I thought I would do is feature a few images of hair colours that I’m liking, and leave it to you girls to tell me which one/s you think I should consider.

Sooooooooo…

Should I do my hair like Leighton Meester, with a warm glossy brown and lighter almost auburn highlights placed randomly, like this:

Or go really dark, with a glossy chocolate brown all over, like Jessica Szohr:

Or go the complete opposite and lighten my hair, like that of the below Olsen Twin image (I think it’s MK, who can tell?):

Or should I stick with my balayage and just get it redone to look similar to this:

Oh and at the moment my hair looks like this, natural hair colour on top and balayage blonde on the ends (which have nearly grown out/chopped all off):

So please help me out and tell me which one of these photos you think I should opt for… you would really be helping me make up my mind. Gosh I’m so indecisive!

1 minute wonders

26 Nov

Hair masks that you can do for less time than it takes to make 2 minute noodles? I know which one I would rather be doing (the one that doesn’t involve the sodium bloat, duhh). I’m pretty lazy when it comes to my hair (I know, tsk tsk), so my ideal hair mask is one that I can do in the shower and leave on for a minute or two whilst I wash my body. Am I not alone? So in my lazy girl quest, I have come across a few you-beaut ‘minute’ wonders you might want to consider:

Stefan Alive One Minute Nourishing Keratin Treatment ($32.95) – I used this treatment in conjunction with the Stefan Alive Nourishing Keratin Shampoo and boy was my hair silky smooth. Keratin naturally occurs in our skin, hair, nails and teeth and can be broken down by heat and external damages. By replenishing the keratin lost in your hair, you can counteract the damage to your hair’s cortex and get frizz-free, straight and silky locks. Being that I already have pretty straight hair, the most noticable results I get from this treatment is silky smoothness and manageable hair, especially during blow-drying.

Schwarzkoph Extra Care Oil Nutritive Repair Butter Mask for Anti Split-ends ($9.95) – I grabbed this mask with the allure of reducing the split-ends I’m getting from a) trying to grow my hair out, and b) getting a light balayage on the lower half of my hair. The rich ‘butter’ formula with argan & shea oils restructure the hair and protect from further split-ends by up to 97% and get this, works in 1 minute! This hair mask is a rich butter texture, which I really like because my ends are so dry from colour damage and this mask really nourishes my hair. Call me crazy, but I have noticed a drastic reduction in the occurence of split-ends. Just be sure not to put this mask on your roots or you will have oily roots to deal with.

Dove Damage Therapy Intensive Repair Treatment Conditioner ($7.99) – this little beauty is a conditioner and treatment in one so you can use this everyday in place of your daily conditioner (or weekly if you prefer). Dove hair products never fail and this one is no exception. The super conditioner makes tresses feel so smooth and silky and takes under 2 minutes to work. And the price is so cheap.

Is anyone else super lazy like me when it comes to hair treatments? It’s funny how I’m so lazy with my hair but I spend so much time everyday applying lotions and serums to my face. 🙂
