Cheap Chills

5 Jun

I’m starting to feel the winter chill now, and boy does my skin know it. The change in season wreaks havoc on my skin and I have to change my skin routine to suit. So in comes the heavy artillery – the winter skin saviours.

If you too are starting to see the harsh signs of winter on your skin… then sit back and let me show you the cheap and cheerful products I am using to keep my skin in tip-top condition in the cooler months… and all products listed are under $35! THAT SHIT CRAY!

Blackmores Natural Vitamin E Cream (AU$9.95) is a rich moisturising cream that protects skin. It has no artificial colours or fragrances and contains vitamin E, avocado oil, apricot kernel oil and vitamin A. I slather this on my face when it needs an instant injection of moisture (you can even use it like a face mask if you don’t like heavy creams left on your face) and I apply liberally onto my dry spots before going to bed (i.e. around my nose).

Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil (AU$19.95) is a natural skin oil that helps to improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks, wrinkles and dry skin.  A combination of potent active ingredients and 100% natural formula make it highly effective for other skin concerns including ageing skin, dehydration, and uneven skin tone. I swear by this product, I use it daily all throughout the year (not just winter). It helps to moisturise dry skin and contains essential fatty acids that are critical for skin health, but aren’t able to be reproduced by our skin. The lipids found in Rosehip oil are similar to those found in your skin; therefore, it absorbs easily, leaving no oily residue. This is of particular importance to people who think applying an oil will give you oily skin… MUCH THE OPPOSITE. It actually helps to balance oil flow in the skin.

Sukin Botanical Hydration Booster* (AU$23.95), a 100% natural elixir, rich in argan oil and immortelle formulated to help improve skin elasticity and deliver bright, radiant skin. Great for an instant hydration boost when you have been travelling in dry air conditions or work in harsh air conditioning all day (ME!). Contains a lot of skin-loving essentials oils such as Jojoba Oil, Ylang Ylang and Argan Oil.

Sukin Hydrating Mist Toner (AU$9.95) an alcohol-free, skin hydrating mist combines German chamomile and rosewater to help soothe, tone and cool tired skin. Use after cleansing (I use it as a toner) or whenever your skin feels tired or stressed. Perfect for hot days, long flights or long days in an air-conditioned environment.

Vaseline Cocoa Butter Deep Conditioning Lotion (AU$7.99 / $10.99,  375mL / 750mL) contains rich cocoa butter to help even skin tone, while smoothing away roughness and penetrating deep into the skin where dryness starts. The specially formulated lotion is enriched with vitamin E and conditioning moisturisers to leave skin soft and supple, without leaving an oil slick all over your body. I love that this lotion instantly absorbs into the skin so you’re not slipping and sliding around. Oh and the pump top is oh so convenient!

Lanolips Lemonaid Lip Aid (AU$15.95) is an ultra rich and creamy whipped lanolin lip treatment with organic lemon oil to naturally exfoliate, leaving lips fresh, soft and moist. The citric acid in the organic lemon oil acts as a natural exfoliator on dry, dead skin. I apply this to my lips before bed every night and wake up with soft, supple and non-scaly lips every morning. I don’t think I could do without this wonder product in Winter. It is literally my lip lifesaver!

Baby Lips in NEW! Mango Pie (AU$3.95), a lip balm that gives 8 hour hydration and is super hydrating thanks to shea butter, centella and vitamin complex. And for those of you who don’t know, centella is a herb that is an effective remedy for various ailments, one being skin conditions. Cheap and effective, GET ON THAT SHIZ! Mango Pie and the NY Fashion Week  limited edition in Berry are both my favourites.

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream (AU$34) is a light-textured cream giving 24-hour hydration, it helps to retain moisture within the skin, leaving skin feeling comfortable and well-balanced. The hero ingredients, Antarcticine and Imperata Cylindrica both have super hydrating properties to shield your skin from the harsh cold climate and to retain the moisture in your skin. I swear by this moisturiser. I recommend it for all skin types. Try it… trust me you won’t be disappointed.

The whole idea is to be pumping in as much moisture into your skin over the cooler months to make sure that your skin stays plump and glowing. If you didn’t know, essential fatty acids are key to keeping your skin and hair healthy, so as well as applying hydration and moisture onto your skin make sure to pop 2 – 4 Fish Oil capsules a day to maintain your body’s omega 3 fatty acids.

So Hautees, any tips for maintaining healthy and hydrated skin throughout Winter? I would to hear your tips and product recommendations.

Products marked with a * were kindly sent for consideration, as per my disclosure statement, this did not influence my opinion in any way and all reviews are of my own honest opinion.

Endless Summer

10 Jan

As the weather this summer in QLD has been shithouse to say the least, I needed some help in the sun-kissed sector. I had a wedding to attend, and even though it was pouring rain, I didn’t want to look pasty and white. So off I headed to Myer, I had my eye on the latest release from ModelCo, their TAN MOUSSE.

You can purchase ModelCo from Myer, David Jones, Priceline or any other participating retailer, but I headed to Myer as I had a few other things to get. As a promotion before Christmas, Myer had a gift pack containing the TAN MOUSSE (AU $35.00 for 180ml) and the TAN EXTENDER (AU $24.00 for 200ml) all for only AU $39.00. It worked out to be only $4 more to get the tan extender, YEHHAW!

ModelCo TAN MOUSSE is a super lightweight, easy-to-apply, self-tanning and instant bronzing foam for body (I don’t use this on my face), that provides a deep, fast tan that will last for days. And when I say days, I mean DAYS. Try 7 days, that’s how long mine lasted. That rivals the longevity of a salon spray tan!

Now, I’m an avid fan of the Ella Bache Great Tan Mousse, so this poor lass had major high standards to compete with. My favourite product of ModelCo’s was their Spray TAN IN A CAN, and I was hoping that the mousse would give me the same great colour, but with easier application. The pleasant smelling foam, is caramel-tinted leaving a bronze glow as you tan so you can see where it’s applied, leaving you with perfectly streak-free tan everytime. The DHA self-tan develops within hours, the colour is great and definitely streak-free. TAN MOUSSE contains 6% DHA (the highest amount of tanning agent used in ModelCo tanning products) and Caramel Extract for its unrivaled natural colour.

The TAN MOUSSE features a new innovative fragrance technology which is supposed to lock out any chemical odors, so there’s no tell-tale ‘fake-tan smell’ – this was true for when I first applied it, I was left with a somewhat sweet caramel scent. However, after a few hours of it developing, the tell-tale ‘fake-tan smell’ reared it’s ugly head. I guess that just comes with the high percentage of DHA.

I applied the tan the afternoon before the event with my Ella Bache buffing mitt (see below for ModelCo alternative) and slept in it overnight. I awoke the morning of the event, stumbled into my ensuite and looked at myself and thought “Holy Wonka and his Oompa Loompas, I am ORANGE!”

I then jumped into the shower faster than you could say “Wonka Nerdilicious Sour Sticks” and scrubbed feverishly to try and tone down the colour by exfoliating the hell out of my skin. I think it worked, because the colour didn’t seem so orange after that.

Here is the result of the colour, sorry the image isn’t very big and there isn’t too much to show of it. I had to crop other people out of it.

I was happy with the end result and I will keep using the ModelCo TAN MOUSSE.

Tips for application of ModelCo TAN MOUSSE

STEP 1. Shake bottle well before each use. For optimum results, apply to clean, exfoliated skin within 10 minutes of showering. For even, streak-free results, apply using ModelCo BLEND BUFFING MITT (AU $11.95).

STEP 2. Gently massage the foam into the skin, working on one area of the body at a time. Use sparingly on knees, elbows & ankles. Wash hands immediately after use.

STEP 3. Wait 10 minutes before dressing and at least 4 hours before washing.

TAN EXTENDER is the latest exciting addition to the ModelCo TAN range – use it to intensify or extend the life of your tan, whilst nourishing and toning your skin. Or, simply use TAN EXTENDER on it’s own for a natural-looking sun kissed glow all year round.

TAN EXTENDER contains nourishing active ingredients such as Green Tea, Caffeine, Ivy Extract, Bladderwrack and Horse Chestnut Extract, which all work to improve the skins tone and texture.

GREEN TEA (CAMELLIA SINENSIS) EXTRACT
• A potent anti-oxidant, acting as an anti-inflammatory & preventing the visible signs of aging.

CAFFEINE
• Stimulates blood flow in the skin,
• Rich in tannins, acting as an astringent, constricting blood vessels and the skin
• Skin feels more toned as puffiness is reduced.

IVY (HEDERA HELIX) EXTRACT
• Works as an astringent and a decongestant, firming body tissue by eliminating excess water.

BLADDER WRACK (FUCUS VESICULOSUS) EXTRACT
• Contains skin-softening properties as it improves the skin’s elasticity through its water binding properties.

HORSE CHESTNUT (AESCULUS HIPPOCASTANUM) EXTRACT
• Has astringency and anti-inflammatory benefits.
• Skin appears more toned and smooth as fluid retention is reduced by increasing the permeability of the capillaries and allowing the reabsorbtion of excess fluid back into the circulatory system.

I haven’t used the TAN EXTENDER long enough to report on the skin benefits above, but the product lives up to its tan amplifying effects. I believe this helped extend the life of my tan to a week and made sure I didn’t get the patchiness when the tan eventually started to wear off. The lotion itself is sweet smelling and rubs into the skin considerably well. I would use this self-tan extender only when I have a tan on, as the product contains Mineral Oil which I am not keen on, however I can’t deny it does a wonderful job at keeping my skin hydrated and provide a longer lasting, natural-looking tan.

Sugar and Spice and all things Nice

3 Dec

Yay! Christmas is fast approaching (22 sleeps till Christmas, SAY WHAT!?). At the shops on the weekend I got to choose an early Christmas gift so I made a beeline for The Body Shop to see what awesome smelling gifts they had in store, and they did not disappoint! Upon entering the store, they had the New Limited Edition Christmas season range on display out the front and the Spiced Vanilla range caught my eye nose (as I am a sucker for anything vanilla scented). The range also includes Cranberry Joy and Jolly Orange.

Even after browsing and smelling the entire contents of the store, my mind was made up. I WANTED the Spiced Vanilla goodies. Nothing compared to THAT SCENT! It’s sweet in an exotic way and it should come with a Warning: “Please refrain from licking/eating these products, they are not edible even though you may think otherwise”.

Spiced Vanilla Body Lotion (250ml, $22.95) – A lightly fragranced body moisturiser containing Community Fair Trade Sesame Oil. Delicately fragranced with the deliciously sweet scent of vanilla with a hint of spice. All the goodies in the christmas range include Community Fair Trade ingredients. The body lotion contains Community Fair Trade Sesame Oil, The Body Shop buy this Community Trade sesame oil from the Juan Francisco Paz Silva Co-operative. Their trade helps the 275 members receive a sustainable income.

The lotion is very light and easy to apply (which is why I opted for it over the body butter) and comes as a pump pack (WIN!). This baby resides on my bedside table and I am constantly slathering it on because it smells A.W.E.S.O.M.E! It’s very moisturising (from the sesame seed oil and cocoa seed butter) and it absorbs quickly so you aren’t left with any oily/sticky residue. I can’t stop using this, it’s everything you could want in a body lotion. The only bad thing? That it’s Limited Edition. Waaahhhhhh! 😥

Spiced Vanilla Body Scrub (200ml, $27.95) – Delicately fragranced with the deliciously sweet scent of vanilla with a hint of spice. Leaves skin exfoliated and smooth. Contains Community Fair Trade Honey. The Body Shop use Community Trade honey from Ethiopia. Their trade enables African beekeepers to practise traditional beekeeping, using hives handcrafted from locally sourced materials. This method helps promote strong, healthy bees and deters logging.

I love The Body Shop scrubs and this one is right up there! The product is very gritty and it sure does “scrub”. I recommend using a pair of exfoliating gloves with this product as all the gritty pieces will get lost in a loofah and your hands, while they could be used, probably just won’t cut it. Anything  bad? Not with the product itself, but it is quite tricky screwing the lid back on when you have exfoliating gloves on, AND they are covered in product.

Spiced Vanilla Lip Balm (15ml, $9.95) – Delicately fragranced with the deliciously sweet scent of vanilla with a hint of spice. A moisturising balm with delicate shimmer and Community Fair Trade Beeswax to leave the lips soft and smooth. The Community Trade beeswax is supplied by Guide D’Espoir in Cameroon. It comes from hives handcrafted from locally sourced materials in the remote Adamaoua region. This traditional method of beekeeping helps promotes strong, healthy bees and deters logging.

I originally wasn’t going to get a lip balm, but the sales lady said it was really good and now I’m so glad that I did – because IT IS REALLY GOOD! It smells divine, it’s ultra moisturising and it leaves a slight shimmer on your lips. This balm has taken over from my beloved Paw Paw ointment (thought I’d give her a little rest as she works overtime the poor thing). And a little bit goes a looooong way (be careful not to apply too much) so I foresee this tin of vanilla-ry goodness will last forever and will be sitting on my work desk for awhile.

So if you find yourself wandering aimlessly around the shopping centre, like myself, trying to think of an awesome christmas gift idea, then head to The Body Shop for a bit of a looksie (seriously, even if it is just to smell the range, it’s so yummy). Not only will the recipient love it, you will be helping The Body Shop in its support for community fair trade, and I think that in itself is a glorious thing… the excellent body products you get as well? Just icing on the Christmas pudding really!
