Brisbane Bloggers Bring Out Their Alter Ego!

6 Jun

I heart Illamasqua, it’s one of those brands that push the envelope, force you to think outside the box and have fun expressing yourself with makeup. On Friday evening, June 3rd, Illamaqua held a Beauty Blogger Event for a privileged number of Brisbane beauty bloggers, and I must say, it made me fall even more in love with Illamasqua (as if I didn’t already love them enough), and here’s why:

  • The Illamasqua brand pushes the envelope, it’s bright, quirky, fun and most importantly, of VERY HIGH quality (it has been created to be used as theatre makeup so you know you’re going to get highly pigmented, long lasting products – and who doesn’t love that?!).
  • Everyone behind this brand is SO passionate, SO friendly, SO creatively minded, SO talented, SO inspiring. They just love what they do, they love to pass on their knowledge and most of all, love to transform people and bring out their alter ego.
  • They are the fastest growing makeup brand ever, and rightly so!
  • They are also a brand with a conscience, and are proud of the fact that none of their products, from blushers to brushes, are tested on animals.
  • As a brand that promotes the right to experiment and self-express through the way you look, Julian Kynaston didn’t think it was right to create a brand that encouraged people to wear bold looks (male or female), without being commited to stamping out prejudice, hatred and intolerance everywhere…

On 11th August 2007, 20 year-old Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend Robert Maltby were kicked, stamped on and left unconscious – for nothing more than looking different. Sophie later died from her injuries. As a tribute to Sophie, Illamasqua commissioned ‘Dark Angel’ – a short film by award-winning French director, Fursy Teyssier, that’s a haunting rendition of Sophie’s story, featuring the music of iconic British band, Portishead. The aim of the film is to raise awareness of The Sophie Lancaster Foundation and generate £500,000 to help educate young people about tolerance. Since Sophie’s death, the Foundation has been working with behavioural experts Huthwaite International, to put together an interactive youth workshop that does just that.

If that wasn’t enough of an indicator of the balls behind this brand, here is a snippet of the heritage of the makeup brand and how it came about:
“Illamasqua is the product of a heady mix of influences. Its roots stem from the dark and illicit 1920s club scene, and combine a rich heritage in the manufacture of make-up for film and theatre. It also takes inspiration from members of the ‘alternative scenes’ for whom self-expression is paramount. Alternative cultures have always dared to be dramatic. They have an emotional attachment to making up. It’s an expression of their darker side, a release for their alter ego.
Illamasqua is for the bolder person hiding inside all of us. It is an act and an attitude. A symbol of tolerance. A celebration of idiosyncrasies. A confident statement of self-ownership.”
Illamasqua Australia was kind enough to take the time to host an event at the Illamasqua counter, Myer Centre to introduce the brand to all the Brisbane bloggers. The event was an opportunity for bloggers to meet Christabel Draffin from the Australian team (finally, after many a Twitter/email conversation), hear all about Illamasqua, watch MUA Tiarah demonstrate a look from the Toxic Nature collection, and for Christabel let us in on some exciting upcoming news for the brand.

The Toxic Nature collection… drool!
The False lashes come in a strip, and for around $30 you get 3-4 sets of lashes – amazing!

A lot of people will be excited by the news that Illamasqua are pushing the boundaries further to bring us the first Illamasqua fragrance this year! It has been two years in the making, with Joe Corre the man behind the Agent Provocateur fragrance, at the helm working on the fragrance, which will be like no other! I hear that the fragrance is going to be using scents from forbidden flowers that only bloom at night, so envision a scent that is magical, timeless and daringly provocative… just like Illamasqua (and I can’t wait to see the bottle design!! eeep!). *ADDS TO CHRISTMAS WISH LIST*

More excitement ensued when Christabel told us that the new collection, to hit shelves late in the year, is OUT OF THIS WORLD. If you thought that the previous Throb collection was raunchy, this collection will make that look tame in comparison. It will make you hot under the collar and is something that will not have been done by any other makeup brand…ever! Well it is Illamasqua for crying out loud, they aren’t known to follow the pack. And we love that, so I’m excitement to see how far they will push the “raunch” factor.

Christabel also announced the exciting news that later this month, Illamasqua will be seeing a brand new addition to the Illamasqua foundation range, the Skin Base Foundation:

New Skin Base Foundation

Inspired by the cult Asian market Beauty Balm (BB) creams, Skin Base Foundation is a brand new, refined formula unlike anything on the UK market. Easily blendable, it effortlessly creates a perfect complexion, and like the entire Illamasqua foundation range, is undetectable in a professional HD environment. Suitable for all skin types, it smoothes, softens and conditions your skin whilst providing natural, buildable coverage.

It’s touted to be the Ultimate ‘Skin Realism’ Foundation! *GRABBY HANDS* I can’t wait to get my mitts on this!!!!! This product will appeal to girls, who just like me, want to use a BB type cream but the asian formulas are too white and don’t have a colour to suit more tanned skins.

And last but not least, the gift bag! I did a little happy dance (okay maybe it was a big happy dance) when I saw what I got… seriously, Christabel is my makeup fairy godmother! I got exactly what I was drooling over at the event.

I received Hussy Powder Blush and Indulge Intense Lipgloss… I DIE!!

I just want to end this post, with an ode from Illamasqua that all girls should embrace – everyone is beautiful, everyone should embrace their alter ego and everyone should have fun whilst doing so!

I was invited as a guest to attend the Brisbane Illamasqua Blogger event, I’m not affiliated with the brand (just a HUGE fan) and all opinions are of my own. Thank you so much to Christabel Draffin for organising this event.
