let it breathe

8 Jul

Do you go days without makeup to let your skin breathe? You should if you don’t… I rate it highly, alongside haloumi cheese, cupcakes and puppy snuggles. I usually choose one day of the weekend when I know I’m just going to be slothing around the house cleaning, watching The Vampire Diaries and doing the grocery shopping, and today was one of those days!

Here I am without makeup on today…

I feel like my skin benefits greatly from letting it “breathe” for the day. To give it the best chance at refreshing, I cleansed my face this morning with a natural exfoliant. It’s by Wild Nature which can be found here and it is great to use first thing in the mornings to slough away the dead skin cells that have built up and also stimulate the blood flow to the skin to give your face a healthy glow.

The Wild Nature Face & Body Exfoliant (AU$33.00) containing pure Aloe Vera and crushed Almond Shell is a gentle face & body polish that removes dead skin cells. Giving you that deep cleanse needed to ensure that new cells can develop and surface. A twice weekly application that leaves your skin fresh, stimulated, smooth and hydrated.

Aloe Vera is great for stimulating the natural healing mechanisms of the body. Some of the most prominent active ingredients contained in Aloe Vera are:

  • Vitamins A, C, E, B, B12, Choline, Folic Acid
  • 7 of the 8 essential amino acids
  • 9 essential minerals such as Calcium, Copper, Chromium, Magnesium, Iron, Potassium, Zinc, Sodium, and Manganese.
  • Enzymes

Wow that’s a lot right? Using this just twice a week is all that is needed for brighter and more radiant skin.

And back to letting it breathe… it needs a break from all the makeup. So please, when you are at home and you’re reaching for the makeup just think “do I really need to put my face on today?”. If you can do without… DO! Your skin will thank you for it.

Oh but please remember to still wear sunscreen. This is a MUST!

Tell me hautees, will you be giving your skin a day off soon?
Please do, then Tweet or Facebook me if you do. I would love to know who’s giving their skin a little breather.

Time for another Lob chop

26 Jun

It has just recently come to my attention that my hair has grown A LOT in the last few weeks and it could almost be classified as mid-length at the moment… NOOOOO *screams and writhers like the Wicked Witch of the West doused in water*

Time to chop it back to my much beloved Lob (aka long bob) and add back in some gradual balayge ends. As it always goes… I jump on the internet for some hairspiration. What girl doesn’t? Below are a few photos of the look I will be aiming for when I go sit in the hairdresser’s chair.

I especially love Miroslava Duma’s hair in photos 1 and 2. What do you think Hautees? Which photo should I be taking to the hairdresser as hairspiration?

If I could look like anyone it would be Miroslava, don’t you agree? She’s a total fox!

A ‘Sheike’ Event for Brisbane Fashionistas

31 May

Two weeks back I was invited to attend the official opening night for the first SHEIKE Flagship Boutique in Queensland. Already well established in New South Wales, now it was Brisbane’s turn to fall in love with SHEIKE’s razor sharp tailoring, strong silhouettes and bold prints.

Fall I did. HARD. I’m still nursing a bump to my head… call it a fashion fatality, but whatever it was, I’m glad it happened. The clothes screamed “me” and the way that the clothing and accessories fell into both ‘work’ and ‘play’ – I just knew that I didn’t want to shop anywhere else for a long time. It was as if ASOS and Netaporter had a baby – and it’s name was SHEIKE.

With 17 retail stores already well established in NSW, SHEIKE Managing Director George Lazaridis decided that Brisbane’s new Wintergarden precinct was the ideal “next big move” for SHEIKE. Thank You George!! Brisbane fashionistas far and wide thank you. Not only is every single piece in-store sophisticated and bang-on-trend… they’re affordable too.

I didn’t even get to look at EVERY.SINGLE.PIECE on the shelves, there was just THAT much stuff. Luckily, there was a fashion parade on the night showcasing SHEIKE’s current collection. I want everything!

We were also spoilt with excellent service (thank you Karah! I know you will probably read this), great food (a massive cheese platter that would have easily occupied me for an hour or so, except I was too busy trying on the entire store) and a surprise performance by Paulini, who was amazing and also so down to earth.

Myself (left), Annica from Haute and Stylish (centre) and Yolanda from Shopping Intervention (right)

But wait! There’s more good news… SHEIKE will bolster its presence in Queensland with another new store set to open in August at Westfield Carindale and further sites soon to be announced (I have a sneaking suspicion it will be Westfield Chermside… You heard it here first hautees!!)

I of course picked up a few pieces on the night and I will do a post on my purchases for you all soon. I am already planning my next visit.

Check out the new store at Shop G04 Wintergarden Shopping Centre, Queen Street Mall Brisbane, QLD.

You can also shop online at http://www.sheike.com.au

weekend.snapshots / birthday edition

1 Aug

Last Monday was my 25th birthday, so of course, being a girl, I claimed the weekend before and the week following as a kind of “festival of my birth” to enjoy being spoilt and relax. And it was great. Sunday we had a barbeque at home and the day was beautiful… glorious in fact! I had to wear sunnies and move out of the sun. The boy took on his challenge of making me a Hello Kitty cake, and as I’m sure you can agree, he succeeded well beyond many expectations (he fancies himself a bit of a chef). I finished off a great Sunday by watching my fave – One Tree Hill (I’m up to season 7).

Monday was THE day! I was given my new Canon Ixus 220HS by my darling boyfriend and after making sure I had perfect eyebrows (I actually said to the boy, it’s my birthday I have to have perfect brows!) we both headed off to Vue Lounge for a late breakfast. As always, the food was great. We then headed to the shops, where we met my Mum and had a look around before I headed off to my appointment at MAC to get my makeup done. The Semi-Precious range had been released that very morning, so I took delight in choosing out some pieces for the MUA to use (so I would know whether I wanted to get them or not – AND I DID!)

So with my makeup done, I then rushed off to South Bank with the family to have my birthday dinner at Bamboo Basket (dumplings… my fave!) and closely followed by a choco-verload at Max Brenner!

Now I guess I better get cracking on that quarter life crisis! :)

June Favourites 2011

27 Jul

It doesn’t look like I will get around to doing a June Favourites video, just like it doesn’t look like I’ll be 5kg lighter this summer. Oh well. You win some you lose some. Some major tooth pain from a root canal procedure, coupled with a sense of blah has really put my mojo off this month. Being in a drugged up stupor wasn’t very conducive to blog writing/youtube videos either (that may work for some people, but not me). Hopefully the worst of it is behind me now, I don’t want to be mojo-less for much longer.

So I know it’s almost to the end of July, but better late than never right??! Here is the rundown of my favourite products from the month of June:

White D-Tox [Bright Cell] Cleanser – $49.00 (AUD) for 125ml

This instant brightening micro-scrub cleanser is formulated with Biotherm’s ‘Bright Cell’ complex and Pure Extract of Thermal Plankton to help minimise the appearance of pigmentation and dark spots on the skin’s surface. And it does just that! Don’t you love products that do what they actually say they should. Let me answer that for you, YES! Hence why it is one of my favourites for the month (and every month mind you).

Napoleon Perdis Blush Patrol – $60.00 (AUD)

The swirl of rich pigments in this baked blush creates a natural flush that lasts all day. The shimmering shades imbue skin with a ravishing pop of color – who doesn’t want that? Blush Patrol is enriched with Vitamins A and C. I love the fine gold flecks in this blush, that would suit any skin tone. The colour pay off is incredible, and gives your face that glowy gleam that we crave so much in Winter. I have been reaching for this blush a lot the past month to instil some colour and glow to my dull complexion.

NARS Orgasm Illuminator – $58.00 (AUD) for 30ml

Another shimmer inducer! This luminous cream magically transforms lackluster skin into a flawless, glowing complexion. I love the faint gold fleck combined with the peachiness of this, as I always like to wear coral blushes. The Orgasm Illuminator gives me glowing cheeks and a lit-from-within look that perks up my lack-lustre complexion.

Biotherm Skin.Ergetic Night Cream – $65.00 (AUD) for 50ml

Biotherm creates SKIN.ERGETIC NIGHT, its first overnight visible high-recovery moisturiser with five tea & seed fractions. A formula with a purifying complex that promotes the elimination of impurities generated by free radicals on the skin’s surface and diminishes visible signs of fatigue. As a non-user of night creams, this one was PERFECT for me. I was always scared that a night cream was going to be too oily and heavy for my skin, but this night cream from Biotherm is such a winner for younger skin. It hasn’t broken me out and I don’t wake up with a oil slick. Phew!

OPI Pirates of the Caribbean Minis Collection – $24.95 (AUD) for 4 x 3.75ml

A limited edition collection of four mini swashbuckling shades from the Pirates of the Caribbean Collection. The OPI Pirates of the Caribbean Minis Collection contains: Skull + Glossbones: a khaki gray shade; Planks A Lot: a lavender shade; Sparrow Me The Drama: a strawberry pink shade; Stranger Tides: a sage green shade. I love all the colours and they all apply like a dream!

Rahua Finishing Treatment – $65.00 (AUD) for 2oz

A finishing treatment that rivals the famed Morrocanoil (in my opinion). Super-fine Rahua oil molecules deeply penetrate the hair’s cortex to rebuild even the most damaged tresses – strengthens strands and leaving hair smooth, shiny and frizz-free. Silicone-free, it strengthens and allows hair to grow longer while providing a glossy, weightless finish. Rich with organic and 100% natural ingredients… oh and it smells nommy!

Have you tried any of these?

Tell me, do you have any favourites that I MUST try?

Brisbane Bloggers Bring Out Their Alter Ego!

6 Jun

I heart Illamasqua, it’s one of those brands that push the envelope, force you to think outside the box and have fun expressing yourself with makeup. On Friday evening, June 3rd, Illamaqua held a Beauty Blogger Event for a privileged number of Brisbane beauty bloggers, and I must say, it made me fall even more in love with Illamasqua (as if I didn’t already love them enough), and here’s why:

  • The Illamasqua brand pushes the envelope, it’s bright, quirky, fun and most importantly, of VERY HIGH quality (it has been created to be used as theatre makeup so you know you’re going to get highly pigmented, long lasting products – and who doesn’t love that?!).
  • Everyone behind this brand is SO passionate, SO friendly, SO creatively minded, SO talented, SO inspiring. They just love what they do, they love to pass on their knowledge and most of all, love to transform people and bring out their alter ego.
  • They are the fastest growing makeup brand ever, and rightly so!
  • They are also a brand with a conscience, and are proud of the fact that none of their products, from blushers to brushes, are tested on animals.
  • As a brand that promotes the right to experiment and self-express through the way you look, Julian Kynaston didn’t think it was right to create a brand that encouraged people to wear bold looks (male or female), without being commited to stamping out prejudice, hatred and intolerance everywhere…

On 11th August 2007, 20 year-old Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend Robert Maltby were kicked, stamped on and left unconscious – for nothing more than looking different. Sophie later died from her injuries. As a tribute to Sophie, Illamasqua commissioned ‘Dark Angel’ – a short film by award-winning French director, Fursy Teyssier, that’s a haunting rendition of Sophie’s story, featuring the music of iconic British band, Portishead. The aim of the film is to raise awareness of The Sophie Lancaster Foundation and generate £500,000 to help educate young people about tolerance. Since Sophie’s death, the Foundation has been working with behavioural experts Huthwaite International, to put together an interactive youth workshop that does just that.

If that wasn’t enough of an indicator of the balls behind this brand, here is a snippet of the heritage of the makeup brand and how it came about:
“Illamasqua is the product of a heady mix of influences. Its roots stem from the dark and illicit 1920s club scene, and combine a rich heritage in the manufacture of make-up for film and theatre. It also takes inspiration from members of the ‘alternative scenes’ for whom self-expression is paramount. Alternative cultures have always dared to be dramatic. They have an emotional attachment to making up. It’s an expression of their darker side, a release for their alter ego.
Illamasqua is for the bolder person hiding inside all of us. It is an act and an attitude. A symbol of tolerance. A celebration of idiosyncrasies. A confident statement of self-ownership.”
Illamasqua Australia was kind enough to take the time to host an event at the Illamasqua counter, Myer Centre to introduce the brand to all the Brisbane bloggers. The event was an opportunity for bloggers to meet Christabel Draffin from the Australian team (finally, after many a Twitter/email conversation), hear all about Illamasqua, watch MUA Tiarah demonstrate a look from the Toxic Nature collection, and for Christabel let us in on some exciting upcoming news for the brand.
