loving lately… lorna jane

19 Aug

I’ve been thinking of starting a new series on the blog, instead of the monthly favourites posts that I used to do on YouTube, I thought I would do a random series called “loving lately…” where every now and then I would post up what I am loving right now. It could be anything… and I’ll post whenever, as I can’t keep to a monthly schedule due to my work.

So to kick off the first post in this series, I am loving lately… Lorna Jane Active Wear.

There’s nothing better than a few new gym pieces to get your motivated and looking too cool for school in the yard gym. So for my birthday last month I asked family and friends for gift vouchers so that I could pick up some new gym gear from Lorna Jane. I also got some spanking new Nike Free Run joggers from the boy.

All the pieces above are what I treated myself to with my 20% off birthday voucher (you should really sign up for the Lorna Jane e-newsletters if you want to get a discount on your birthday and keep up to date with their promotions). Starting from the top left, the Edelina Crop AU$62.99, the Akira full length tight AU$98.99, bottom left is the Live Big Singlet AU$34.99 and the right is the Run for Fun Excel Tank AU$62.99.

I’m so obsessed with the LJ active wear, it just makes you feel instantly healthy and motivated as soon as you put it on. I remember my Mum wearing Lorna Jane back when she used to be a fitness instructor (and I was a little one) and I love that it’s a Queensland company.

So tell me hauties, do you wear and love Lorna Jane?

Swap&Shop – A Fashion Charity Event

16 Jul

Shopping for a good cause… yes please! That’s what myself and a fellow blogger will be doing tomorrow night when we attend the Swap&Shop Fashion Charity Event held by Alpha Car Hire and Variety, the children’s charity. We will take along five of our pre-loved fashion items (anything from clothing, jewellery and accessories) to then be added into one huge wardrobe SWAP stemming from hundreds of Brisbane’s most fashionable, to then pick out (or SHOP) five new items to update our existing wardrobe, all for only $25 (with proceeds going to charity), and all whilst sipping on champagne, eating canapés and chatting with fellow fashionistas.

Brisbane family business Alpha Car Hire is drawing on Brisbane’s most style savvy shoppers to attend its first ever Swap&Shop charity fundraiser as it aims to raise $10,000 for the Variety Children’s Charity before the annual XXXX Gold Variety Bash in August.

The event is being hosted by revered Image Boutique stylist Sara-Hatten Masterson and is being held at The Princess Theatre in Woolloongabba on July 17.

According to Alpha Car Hire Sales and Marketing Director Jacqui Miller, the event provides a unique way for women to refresh their wardrobe while helping a great cause.

“We wanted to marry the Swap&Shop concept with our own charity initiatives to create an event that really is the best of both worlds,” said Mrs Miller. “Our guests can come along, have some fun and update their wardrobe all while helping a fantastic charity make a difference.

“With so many different fashion styles expected to be on offer, there will no doubt be some great pieces to be discovered and we have some great prizes and goody bags to give away too.”

Alpha Car Hire has already raised over $25,000 for Variety this year alone, with its inaugural Swap&Shop event is a major part of its strategy to raise $100,000 by the end of the year, with all funds to be donated to helping disadvantaged kids through this highly respected charity organisation.

A ‘Sheike’ Event for Brisbane Fashionistas

31 May

Two weeks back I was invited to attend the official opening night for the first SHEIKE Flagship Boutique in Queensland. Already well established in New South Wales, now it was Brisbane’s turn to fall in love with SHEIKE’s razor sharp tailoring, strong silhouettes and bold prints.

Fall I did. HARD. I’m still nursing a bump to my head… call it a fashion fatality, but whatever it was, I’m glad it happened. The clothes screamed “me” and the way that the clothing and accessories fell into both ‘work’ and ‘play’ – I just knew that I didn’t want to shop anywhere else for a long time. It was as if ASOS and Netaporter had a baby – and it’s name was SHEIKE.

With 17 retail stores already well established in NSW, SHEIKE Managing Director George Lazaridis decided that Brisbane’s new Wintergarden precinct was the ideal “next big move” for SHEIKE. Thank You George!! Brisbane fashionistas far and wide thank you. Not only is every single piece in-store sophisticated and bang-on-trend… they’re affordable too.

I didn’t even get to look at EVERY.SINGLE.PIECE on the shelves, there was just THAT much stuff. Luckily, there was a fashion parade on the night showcasing SHEIKE’s current collection. I want everything!

We were also spoilt with excellent service (thank you Karah! I know you will probably read this), great food (a massive cheese platter that would have easily occupied me for an hour or so, except I was too busy trying on the entire store) and a surprise performance by Paulini, who was amazing and also so down to earth.

Myself (left), Annica from Haute and Stylish (centre) and Yolanda from Shopping Intervention (right)

But wait! There’s more good news… SHEIKE will bolster its presence in Queensland with another new store set to open in August at Westfield Carindale and further sites soon to be announced (I have a sneaking suspicion it will be Westfield Chermside… You heard it here first hautees!!)

I of course picked up a few pieces on the night and I will do a post on my purchases for you all soon. I am already planning my next visit.

Check out the new store at Shop G04 Wintergarden Shopping Centre, Queen Street Mall Brisbane, QLD.

You can also shop online at http://www.sheike.com.au

Up Late with Marie Claire and James St

27 Mar

Timed to coincide with the launch of Marie Claire’s 200th edition issue, the Marie Claire James Street ‘Up Late’ event will see a myriad of shoppers descend upon James Street to take advantage of an array of special offers from the likes of Mecca Cosmetica, Endota, St Barts, Calexico and more… Think discounts, gifts with purchase, and designer meet-and-greets. Basically, one big stylish fête!

Not only are there over 70 fantastic special offers for you to access on the night, but Editor and Publisher Jackie Frank and her team will be in stores and walking the street, dishing out style advice and meeting shoppers. There’ll also be a special marie claire lounge opposite Harveys where you can nab a great goody bag, (crammed with an amazing array of products) and maybe a slice of their 200th birthday cake?

And here’s something even sweeter than cake… not only are stores offering delightful discounts and gifts with purchase, they’re also transforming their spaces, and hosting store parties (think champagne, cupcakes and macaroons).

Oh and did I mention some of Australia’s best designers will be there too? Heidi Middleton of sass and bide, Easton Pearson’s Pamela Easton and Lydia Pearson, Camilla Franks of Camilla, the boys from KSUBI and Bec Manning of Rebecca Manning, are just a few of the designers that will be in their stores on the evening.

And if that’s not enough… cru bar + cellar will be transformed into the Louis Roederer champagne bar, where you can take five, and experiences the “Artistry of Champagne”. Plus if you’re feeling a little peckish while you shop, there will be tantalizing street food options, like Mexican at Press, dumplings, steamed buns filled with pork belly, mushrooms and Middle Eastern pita pockets, dotted throughout the street. YUMMMMYYY!

I’ll be there, scoping out the new Mecca Cosmetica store and buying up big, saying HELLO! to 25% off all SOOT. garments, checking out the beautiful designer goods at Frockshop (they will have 20% off on the night), trying on gorgeous dresses at Jules & Roc (20% off store wide, including labels such as Shakuhachi, Manning Cartell and Shona Joy ), checking out the trendy shoes on offer at Zomp (enjoy 15% off store wide), having a squiz inside the new Ksubi store, and grabbing some dumplings and steamed pork buns from the street stalls.

There will be a few great beauty deals on for the one night only. At Endota Spa, book in for an hour treatment with dermalogica products, and take home one of their exfoliation duo packs. It’s filled with products that will give you the most polished skin possible.

Mecca Cosmetica are offering complimentary Smokey Eye Lessons to help you to master this timeless trend. Mecca’s Makeup Artist will teach you the secrets to creating the perfect smokey eye in just a few simple steps. Bookings are essential and subject to availability. Please contact the store on 07 3852 6960 to reserve your appointment.

So come and stay up late at the Marie Claire James Street ‘Up Late’ street party this Thursday March 29, from 5pm on James Street, Fortitude Valley Brisbane. The event is free to attend. Head to www.jamesst.com.au for more info.

Who is coming along? Let me know, it would be great to go shopping with you.

Mario Badescu Haul

30 Jan

I saw on Facebook that my friend Yolanda (from Shopping Intervention) had been to Kit Cosmetics and picked up a Mario Badescu product, and she also told me that our other friend Dana (from Blushfully) was a huge fan of the stuff. I had been wanting to try this line of skincare for ages, and when the girls said that the prices had recently been reduced thanks to the strong Aussie dollar, I was hell bent on getting my hands on some MB. So off I headed on Saturday to Kit Cosmetics to get me some goodies!! So here is what I got… 3 products and a small surprise gift with purchase which were cute sample size products.

I had asked Yolanda and Dana what they recommended and they both agreed that the Drying Lotion was a must and Dana loved the Enzyme Cleansing Gel, so I got both these and the Buffering Lotion which the sales assistant said is really good at getting rid of those pesky little ‘under-the-skin-bumps’ that aren’t quite at the surface, which immediately grabbed my attention. She also said it would help get rid of those blind hormonal pimples under the surface… I hate those! So far, I have used the cleansing gel and the buffering lotion and absolutely LOVE them. The cleanser is low foaming and it makes your skin feel clean without the tight feeling. I used the buffering lotion on some small bumps on my cheek area (most likely caused by rubbing sunglasses) and it almost cleared them up overnight, the area was smoother and the bumps reduced. Amazing.

The samples I got were a Super+ Eye Cream sample, a Kit Cosmetics Bronzing Lotion, a sample size of the Mario Badescu cleanser I bought, and an Origins anti-ageing moisturiser.

I’m so glad that I bought these Mario Badescu goodies, I have a feeling I should stock up… as some of these may become permanent fixtures in my skincare routine. The prices for Mario Badescu at Kit Cosmetics are so reasonable now too, the Enzyme Cleansing gel cost me $18.95 and the Buffering Lotion and Drying Lotion are both $26.95.

I popped into Colette Accessories as well and ended up finding this cute neon pink necklace for a bargain price of $7.95! I just had to grab it… and I thought it would look cool underneath the collar of a black sheer top I own. I thought right…

The Hautees – 2012 People’s Choice Awards

12 Jan

Ahhh, nothing better than a good ol’ red carpet perve. Feast your eyes on my favourite picks from the 2012 People’s Choice Awards Red Carpet… or as I say the ‘hautest of the haute’.

Nina Dobrev from The Vampire Diaries in Elie Saab. Wow. No Words! This gal nails the red carpet look EVERY.YEAR. Who would-a thunk that this green colour would look so striking on Nina. And that hair… so shiny, so luscious, so long. I want this chick’s skin… yes like Silence of the Lambs style. Bahaha. So GREEN with envy…*wink wink*

Jennifer Morrison in Oscar De La Renta. I love this look – so elegant. I’m a huge fan of the bun, and that lipstick colour compliments the outfit so well. She looks radiant. LOVE.

I’m sorry but Kristen Bell just makes it to my list every time, mainly because she always gets it right and more so because I just love her SO DARN MUCH! Any fellow Veronica Mars fans out there? Here she wears Valentino. Doesn’t she just look amazing in red?

Miley Cyrus donned a delightful David Koma dress. Everything is ringing my bell in this image… the hair, the skin, the makeup, the dress, the shoes. Kudos to Miley for this stunningly simple but amazing red carpet look.

What do you think lovelies? Do you agree that these girls are looking hawt?! Who were your favourites?

Invisible from the sun

1 Nov

Summer is right around the corner, and we need to start getting prepared. Yes I know you are all worried about getting your figure ready for summer, but you know what’s more important than that? Protecting your skin from the harmful sun. All the hard work and expensive products you’ve put into/onto your face over the cooler months to get your pigmentation under control is all going to be a big fat waste of time if you don’t put into place protective measures over Spring/Summer. And we all know what this means… yep, slip, slop, slap.

Now I hear you all groaning from here. “Blerghhh sunscreen is so sticky and smelly”, “Erghh how am I supposed to look stylish whilst trying to be sun safe”, “How am I supposed to wear sunscreen EVERYYYY day???”. Well I have some style tips and products that will set you up for summer and have you looking your stylish sun-safe best in time for those hot weekends ahead!

Going to the beach doesn’t have to be all garish rash shirts and fluro zinc… grap yourself a floppy wide-brimmed hat (from the Surf shops or somewhere like Sunburn) and a pair of stylish oversized sunnies, like the gorgeous House of Harlow Chelsea sunglasses (pictured below) to protect yourself from the sun. Also remember to take a clip/barrette like the Mimco one pictured below to whip your hair up into a stylish low bun so that you aren’t caught out with scraggly surf hair after your swim.

My pick for the best protective skin care in Summer (or anytime) would be the great products from Invisible Zinc. Doubling as a high performance sunscreen and moisturiser, Invisible Zinc offers a diverse range of products to help relieve your skin from daily obstacles such as dry flaky skin, dark spots and sun damage. The secret is Invisible Zinc’s chemical free formula, designed to protect you against harmful UVA and UVB rays whilst providing powerful antioxidants to make your skin look radiant and flawless.

The stand out product for me is the INVISIBLE ZINC UV Silk Shield Foundation (15g RRP AU$42) which is a hybrid of a SPF 30+ chemical free sunscreen and stick foundation. In fact, if you were none the wiser, you could be tricked into thinking this is just a stick foundation! No stickiness, no obvious sunscreen smell, no shine, and best of all… HEAPS of coverage. Like I said, this performs exactly like a full coverage cream to powder foundation stick. I love that this is a skin care, sun protection and makeup product all-in-one! It sure does come in handy when you have minimal time to get ready in the morning, as it cuts out so many extra steps. So how does it wear you ask? GREAT! This lasts all day on me (8hrs) and I have oily skin. It covers pigmentation and imperfections and I find it hardly needs a powder. Just swipe and rub in with you fingers. It glides smoothly onto the skin (like SILK!) and provides a luminous, fresh skin finish. The shade I have (medium) is a great match too. The shade variety is very limited though, so that might be a problem for some. I advise you test swatch them first, Myer and David Jones usually have testers out for this.

The other product I have been trialling is the INVISIBLE ZINC Staying Powder (12g RRP AU$38.00) which is a no-colour, setting powder  specially designed  to set and fix the IZ Tinted Daywear Anti-Ageing Moisturising Sunscreen (which needs a setting powder) and give a perfect natural finish. The product says it should melt into the skin and be invisible, sadly, for me this product kind of sits in my pores and is quite visible. It could just happen over the top of the UV Silk Shield Foundation, as it was designed to set the Tinted Daywear sunscreen, so I’m only using it when I’m wearing the tinted sunscreen (which it behaves much better with) for trips to the beach, gardening etc. The tinted daywear is much more like a sunscreen, and is a bit oilier than the Silk Shield Foundation and has less coverage.

Dab on some INVISIBLE ZINC Tinted Lip + Cheek Balm (12g RRP AU$18.00) and waterproof mascara, and you are ready to go.

Stockists include Myer, David Jones, Adore Beauty, Priceline and selected premium pharmacies.  For stockist details please call 1300 738 850 or visit www.invisiblezinc.com

INVISIBLE ZINC® IS AUSTRALIAN MADE AND OWNED USING PATENTED AUSTRALIAN SUNSCREEN TECHNOLOGY.

The UV Silk Shield Foundation and the Invisible Staying Powder were provided for review. As per my disclosure statement, this did not influence my opinion in any way and all reviews are of my own honest opinion.

cheers to the freakin’ weekend

12 Sep

Well well. Hello Monday. I do not like you. You’re such an anticlimax after the delightful weekend I just had.

The T-Boy is back this week which is de-frickin-lightful. If you aren’t aware, the Boy works away, so he’s only back for one week of the month which really sucks balls. But when he is back we take it as an opportunity to spend quality time together and go and eat out (my favourite!!).

Saturday night the boy and I headed out to dinner, and I chose the place – Simpatico Bar & Bistro on the Cnr Given & Latrobe Terrace, Paddington. If you reside in Brisbane, you would know that Saturday was WINDY AS SHIT! I’m talking branch-breaking, bin-bashing type status. So of course, when we got to Simpatico, where were we seated? Outside, stuck right in the corner, away from any of the gas heaters. Hmmm lucky I took a second jacket. But even then, it was still cold. To make matters worse, we were “forgotten” and no waitress took our order for like 15-20 mins!! Supposedly (and this was the excuse given), our waitress had gone missing?

We ordered Fried Green Olives w Roast Garlic Mayo to start, and we both ordered the Beef eye fillet w wild mushroom bread & butter pudding, watercress & confit garlic for mains. I got a Cabernet Merlot (my excuse was it was to warm me up) and the boy got a beer called Little Creatures or something? It was good (for beer)!

Lucky for them, the food was good (they apologised and gave us the olives on the house). I didn’t get to take any pictures of the food because it was a bit too dark (and I didn’t want to bring attention by using the flash). After dining at Simpatico, we headed into Rosalie and got a take home pack of Gelato! YUMMO.

Sunday morning we headed to breakfast at my fave, Vue Lounge in New Farm. This place never disappoints. Best coffee and breakfasts! Afterwards I headed over to Thousand Island Dressing which is in the same complex as Vue and bought a jewellery tree that I had been eyeing off for awhile. L.O.V.E it! I also hit the shops and bought some stuff from Sportsgirl. I’m not too sure on the sunnies. I loved them when I tried them on in the shop, but then at home the boy said they looked a little bit “Harry Potter-cross-Dame Edna”… damn him! Now I’m not too sure on them. LOVE the laser cut suede top I picked up though.

Oh and I also got a new makeup storage box… Will show you guys soon…. as soon as I complete the FUN task of filling it. SO FUNNNNNNNNNNNNN (am I the only freak that thinks organising makeup is fun?)

breakfast at vue *drool*

My tree all decked out in my bling

sportsgirl goodies

What do you think of the sunnies? I think they may only look good with my hair down.

Did you know it’s my last day of having long hair? I go in for the chop tomorrow!! So excited. Stay tuned for blog post.

star.tattoos. + sass & bide.

16 Aug

First of all, sorry for my absence. I have had a hectic few weeks, first with birthday catch ups and now with job applications… I won’t go into detail but let’s just say I haven’t had time for the blog *sad panda*

So as you can tell, a lot has been happening/changing for me over the last week. One of those changes was of the “cosmetically enhanced varieties” (no no, not plastic surgery). My sister and I had an agreement that we were going to get matching tattoos. She went ahead and got hers, and I always put mine off. Partly because I didn’t want to part with the money and another part of me was a bit scared. Was it going to hurt? How does it feel? Does it resemble a needle at all? Was I gonna chicken out?

So for my birthday, my sister booked me in for my tattoo. I went and had it done last Tuesday, and I’m proud to say – I didn’t chicken out (and if you want to know, it doesn’t hurt that much. Just a slight burning sensation). So here is my new/first tattoo!

the new addition

Guess who else has matching star tattoos? The Sass & bide girls!

And guess what? Sass & bide are launching a stylish eyewear collection; and each pair is stamped with a symbol of creative duo Sarah-Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton’s friendship: a star — featured on the tip of every arm — inspired by a tattoo which both designers have. Cute! Maybe if my sister and I ever design something together we can place a star on it yer?

The girls from the sass & bide team including senior creative & accessories designer Pip Edwards and marketing manager Sam Dekauwe join Sarah-Jane and Heidi as the faces for the campaign for the first time. The new eyewear range will be available in sass & bide boutiques, Myer stores and select optical retailers nationally from September 1.
